How to Spot-Check a Compressed Image Batch Before Publishing

A successful batch export is not proof that the images are ready. Compression problems tend to hide in a few predictable places: text printed on packaging, hairline edges, gradients, metallic reflections, and fabric texture. A short spot-check catches them without forcing someone to inspect every file from corner to corner.

Choose a small but difficult sample. Include the darkest image, the brightest image, one item with fine text, one with a smooth background, and one transparent asset if the batch contains PNG or WebP files. Open the source and export side by side at 100 percent. Browser thumbnails are useful for judging composition, but they often conceal ringing, block artifacts, and damaged transparency.

Check the areas that carry product facts first. Ingredients, measurements, model numbers, and warning labels must remain readable. Then inspect the product outline for halos and jagged edges. On gradients, look for visible bands that were not in the source. For clothing, zoom into seams and textured fabric; aggressive compression can turn these areas into a muddy pattern even when the overall image looks acceptable.

Also compare file size against visual benefit. Reducing a 900 KB image to 180 KB may be worthwhile, while pushing it from 180 KB to 120 KB can introduce obvious damage for a small saving. There is no single quality setting that works for every catalog. Product type, source noise, output dimensions, and marketplace processing all affect the result.

Save the chosen settings with the batch name and date. If the spot-check fails, change one setting and export the sample again before touching the full folder. That small discipline makes compression reproducible and gives the next person a clear reason for the chosen balance between load time and image fidelity.
